Acreage under summer crops increased by 5 percent to 2.1 million hectares

New Delhi. Sowing of summer or summer crops is now gaining momentum in various parts of the country. Nationally, the acreage has increased to 2.1 million hectares, a 5 percent increase from 2 million hectares during the same period last year.

According to official data, the total area under summer crops has increased from 2.038 million hectares to 2.13 million hectares during the current year compared to last year. While the area under paddy remained stable at last year's level of 1.778 million hectares,

the area under pulses improved from 76,000 hectares to 91,000 hectares, the area under coarse grains increased from 1.08 lakh hectares to 1.38 lakh hectares, and the area under oilseeds jumped from 77,000 hectares to 1.24 lakh hectares.

Among pulse crops, the area under mung bean cultivation improved from 56,000 hectares to 59,000 hectares, and that under black gram (urad) increased from 19,000 hectares to 25,000 hectares.

Among coarse grains, the area under millet fell from 14,000 hectares to 12,000 hectares, but the area under maize increased from 89,000 hectares to 106,000 hectares. Among oilseed crops, the area under peanut cultivation jumped from 60,000 hectares last year to 104,000 hectares, while the area under sesame remained stable at 12,000 hectares.

Furthermore, some other crops under pulses, oilseeds, and coarse grains are also cultivated to a small extent during the summer season. Sowing of these summer crops will continue for the next few weeks.
