Fazilka. Due to heavy rains in the last four days, standing crops of Kharif season have been submerged in about 20 thousand acres of land in Fazilka district of Punjab.
Due to no help from the district administration, farmers are being forced to take various measures to save the crops at their own level.
The problem has become even more serious due to the blockage of drains. The administration had to get it cleaned thoroughly before the arrival of monsoon but it did not make any effort for this.
In this district, Fazilka sub-division has been most affected by the problem of waterlogging in the fields. There, paddy and cotton crops in 11,700 acres of land are submerged in knee-deep water.
According to official sources, flood-like scenario has been created in at least 20 villages of Fazilka district and crops in the fields are submerged under water.
However, the District Magistrate has claimed that the situation there will become normal in the next one or two days. The administration has activated staff with motor pumps who are trying to drain out the surplus water from the fields.
The SDO of the drainage department says that the water level has started receding. Actually, due to the flow of water from the upper area in the lower areas of Fazilka sub division, the fields got flooded.
Meanwhile, there was also heavy rain there. More than 500 acres of fields have been submerged in Saubana village. This village is located near the India-Pakistan border.
If the drains had been cleaned on time and there was proper arrangement for drainage of water from the fields, then farmers and common people would not have faced difficulties.
Cotton and paddy are cultivated on a large scale in Fazilka district. Paddy crop can bear waterlogging for a few days but cotton crop is very sensitive, so it is necessary to drain out water from its fields quickly.
