Pulpally. Although rice is the main food of the people of Kerala, it is not included in the list of its top producing states. For the central pool, 1-2 lakh tonnes of paddy is purchased by the government agency from the farmers in Kerala.
This time, due to good monsoon rains, the pace of paddy transplantation has increased in Wayanad district of Kerala. Farmers are expecting paddy cultivation to be completed before the end of Karkidakam.
In this division, paddy is cultivated on a large scale, especially in Chekadi, and paddy is being sown there with the help of machines. Paddy is cultivated in about 300 acres of land in Chekadi and surrounding areas.
In this area, crops are often threatened by wild animals, but still farmers have always been cultivating paddy. One special reason for this is that irrigation facilities are available there, due to which the chances of damage to the crop are less.
But due to attacks by wild animals, the area under paddy cultivation has been decreasing in the villages of Pulpalli, Mullankolli and Puthadhi for the last few years.
In any case, the farmers do not get much profit from paddy cultivation and the crop often gets damaged. Kerala is generally known as the 'spice state'.
The yield rate of traditional varieties of paddy there remains low. Now the government is providing good quality seeds to the farmers. Due to this, paddy cultivation can prove to be profitable for the farmers.
