Weekly Review – Urad
Urad prices rise due to subdued selling and strong demand; prices of imported stock also firm

Chennai: Urad prices in the domestic market maintained an upward trend throughout the week. The market found support from easing arrival pressure in producing centers, limited selling by farmers, and increased activity among stockists. Additionally, the strengthening of prices for Urad imported from Myanmar (FAQ and SQ varieties) bolstered domestic market sentiment. Increased buying by pulse mills is providing support to Urad prices; however, due to high price levels, mills are currently purchasing only to meet immediate requirements. The upward trend in prices persists due to limited market availability and subdued selling pressure. Demand for Urad dal is expected to remain strong over the next two months, given the festive season, which could provide further market support. On the other hand, favorable weather conditions are expected to boost arrivals of the new domestic Urad crop in major producing states, potentially improving supply. Market experts suggest that if the price rally continues, intermittent fluctuations may occur due to profit-booking at higher levels. Nevertheless, given the strong demand, limited selling, and rising prices of imported Urad, the market outlook remains bullish for the near term. However, the future trajectory will depend on the arrival of the new crop and the purchasing activity of pulse mills. Due to subdued selling by importers and sustained buying interest, Urad prices in Chennai rose by ₹150–300 per quintal this week, reaching ₹9,600 per quintal for FAQ and ₹10,150 per quintal for SQ varieties.
