Chennai. To ensure supply under other welfare schemes including Public Distribution System (PDS), Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation had invited e-tenders from interested sellers (firms) on July 17 for the purchase of 40 thousand tonnes of tuvar dal.

The last date for submission of offers has been fixed as July 27, 2024. The pulses to be supplied should be either tur (tuvar) or Canadian green lentils. The corporation has been inviting tenders for the purchase of pulses at regular intervals.

At present, tuvar is being imported in India mainly from Myanmar because the preparation for harvesting of new crop has not yet gained momentum in African countries.

However, the condition of tuvar crop is said to be good in other African countries including Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania and up to 5.00-5.50 lakh tonnes of tuvar can be exported to India from there.

But there are chances of some transportation and bureaucratic bottlenecks coming in its way which were seen last year. There are reports that some consignments of tur from Malawi have been stopped at Nacala port and the reasons for this have also not been disclosed.

It is not possible to make any definite estimate as to whether there will be uninterrupted export of tur from Africa to India during the 2024-25 season or there will be some hindrance in it.

The export price of tur in Mozambique for access to Indian ports for August-September deliveries is running at $ 1030 per tonne for white variety and $ 950 per tonne for Jakhota variety, while the export price of Bariadi tur in Tanzania is being reported to be $ 1300 per tonne. This is an indicative price as there is not enough stock available there right now.

On the other hand, the indicative export offer price of new crop green lentil (layered) in Canada is being reported to be $1140-1150 per tonne for September-October-November 2024 shipment, which also includes the cost of transport to Chennai / Tuticorin port in India.
