Stock of approximately 28 lakh tonnes of sugar available in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has asserted that there is no shortage of sugar in the state. Sugar mills hold a stock of approximately 28 lakh tonnes, while sugar production in the state is projected to exceed 90 lakh tonnes during the 2026-27 marketing season (October-September).

According to the Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh consumes about 4 lakh tonnes of sugar per month, and the current stock of around 28 lakh tonnes is sufficient to meet the state's requirements for the next seven months. The Chief Minister expressed optimism that sugarcane crushing operations in the state's sugar mills would commence on October 15, leading to a further increase in sugar stocks. Production in the 2026-27 season is expected to reach at least 90 lakh tonnes (900 lakh quintals), a figure that significantly exceeds demand and consumption levels.

Like other major producing states, Uttar Pradesh has also witnessed a sharp rise in sugar prices. While there were earlier apprehensions regarding a potential sugar shortage in the state, the Chief Minister's statement has dispelled these concerns.

ISMA, the apex industry body, has also stated that there is no actual shortage of sugar and that the steep price hike is driven solely by speculation. Although delivery rates and wholesale market prices have declined in some states, retail prices have not yet dropped; however, prices in the retail sector may also soften over time.
