Rice Exports Hit by West Asia Crisis

New Delhi. The ongoing crisis in West Asia has brought Indian rice export shipments to a standstill and has led to a decline in prices.
The 2025-26 season was initially anticipated to be a stellar one for Indian rice exporters; given a bumper domestic harvest and competitive pricing, exports were expected to surge to new record levels. However, the Iran-Israel conflict has begun to dash these hopes.
Massive stocks of rice have accumulated at Indian ports, yet shipments are not taking place. The volume of these stocks is estimated to be around 400,000 tonnes.
While some rice shipments were loaded onto vessels, they have failed to reach their intended destinations. The situation is unlikely to improve until the conflict involving Iran comes to an end.
India is the world's leading producer and exporter of rice, commanding a share of over 40 percent in the global export market. If exports from India are disrupted, the food security of numerous importing nations could be jeopardized.
