Saskatoon. Amid normal trading in Western Canada, the plant delivery price of red lentils declined by 1 cent to 25 cents per pound, while the FOB farm price of No. 2 quality thick green lentils remained stable at the previous level of 25-26 cents per pound. Other lentil varieties and grades experienced minor fluctuations.
As the lentil sowing season in Canada approaches, farmers are becoming more active. Similarly, advance lentil contracts have been initiated for the purchase and sale of the next crop. Sowing begins in April, and harvesting begins in August.
Australia currently holds a large exportable surplus stock of lentils, and shipments are being made to several countries, including India. New supplies of lentils and other Rabi pulses will begin in India next month. Prices remain largely stable. Lentils from Russia and Kazakhstan are also under pressure. In Canada, lentil prices have been unattractive to farmers this year, so a slight decline in acreage is expected.
