Record Surge in Urea and DAP Sales Across Several States

New Delhi: Sales of key chemical fertilizers like Urea and DAP have hit record highs in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, and Haryana, driven by panic buying among farmers apprehensive about potential supply and availability issues. The sowing season for Kharif crops has commenced, and farmers are attempting to stockpile large quantities of fertilizers to avoid facing difficulties later on.
Hostilities involving Iran, the US, and Israel have reignited, diminishing the likelihood of the Strait of Hormuz remaining open. Although the Government of India repeatedly asserts that there are sufficient fertilizer stocks to meet Kharif season requirements—and that availability is being further bolstered by increasing domestic production and imports—farmers appear skeptical of these official claims.
The Southwest Monsoon is moving from Kerala towards Karnataka and is expected to subsequently reach other states, including Maharashtra and Telangana. Farmers are keen to complete their agricultural preparations well in advance.
