New Delhi. The Central Pool already held substantial stocks of rice and wheat; however, heavy procurement of rice during both the Kharif and Rabi seasons has further boosted these reserves. Similarly, robust government procurement of wheat during the current Rabi season has led to a massive increase in its total stock. After a long period, wheat stocks in the Central Pool have surpassed rice stocks.
According to official data, the total foodgrain stock in the Central Pool surged to a peak of 912 lakh tonnes on June 4, 2026, marking an increase of 139.50 lakh tonnes over the 772.50 lakh tonnes available on May 1, 2026. During this period, rice stocks rose by 10.50 lakh tonnes to reach 400 lakh tonnes, while wheat stocks jumped by 129 lakh tonnes to reach 512 lakh tonnes.
Data indicates that on June 1, 2025, the Central Pool held a total of 736.61 lakh tonnes of foodgrain (comprising 377.85 lakh tonnes of rice and 358.78 lakh tonnes of wheat); the stock level on June 4, 2026, is 175.39 lakh tonnes higher than that figure. Previously, the government held foodgrain stocks of 608.75 lakh tonnes in early June 2024 and 554.94 lakh tonnes in early June 2023.
During the current Rabi marketing season, government wheat procurement has crossed the 350 lakh tonne mark, with the process still ongoing in some areas. Similarly, while procurement of Kharif-season paddy has concluded, procurement of Rabi-season paddy is still underway. This could lead to further improvement in foodgrain buffer stocks.
