Rice Milling Charges Doubled in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The state government of Odisha—a key contributor of rice to the central pool—has doubled rice milling charges. This move aims to encourage rice millers to procure paddy and ensure support for farmers. The Chief Minister of Odisha approved a proposal to this effect last week.

The state government has fixed the milling charges at ₹40 per quintal for parboiled (usna) paddy (up from ₹20) and ₹20 per quintal for raw (arwa) rice (up from ₹10).

This means millers will now receive ₹40 for milling one quintal of parboiled paddy. This measure is expected to incentivize millers to process larger quantities of paddy, thereby facilitating the sale of farmers' produce.

Rice millers had long been demanding an increase in milling charges, citing rising labor costs, fuel price hikes, and increased costs of other milling inputs as reasons for the hike.
