Pulses Sowing Area Increases by 1.83 Lakh Hectares

New Delhi. With the pace of sowing picking up in recent weeks, the area under kharif pulses increased to 117.13 lakh hectares as of September 4, 2026. This is 1.83 lakh hectares, or 1.6 percent, higher than the 115.30 lakh hectares sown during the corresponding period last year.

During the period under review, the area under tur (pigeon pea) increased from 44.93 lakh hectares to 45.66 lakh hectares, while the area under moth bean rose from 9.19 lakh hectares to 9.23 lakh hectares. The area under urad also increased significantly, from 22.46 lakh hectares to 25.15 lakh hectares.

On the other hand, the area under moong declined from 34.23 lakh hectares to 33.19 lakh hectares, while the area under other pulses fell from 4.07 lakh hectares to 3.53 lakh hectares. The sowing of pulse crops has now reached its final stage.

Sowing of tur has declined in major producing states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka. In Maharashtra, the acreage under all three major pulses—tur, urad and moong—has declined. In Rajasthan, the area under moong cultivation has also decreased, despite the state being the largest producer of the crop. Meanwhile, the area under urad has increased in several states.

Rainfall is still continuing in several states, which could benefit pulse crops.
