Production Likely to Decline Despite Increase in Sugarcane Acreage

New Delhi: Another hike in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) encouraged Indian farmers to expand sugarcane cultivation; consequently, the area under this vital industrial crop has risen by 67,000 hectares—from 56.64 lakh hectares last year to 57.31 lakh hectares this season.
While sugarcane acreage has increased in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the area under cultivation in Uttar Pradesh is lagging slightly behind. In other major producing states—including Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana—the acreage has remained largely stable or seen only marginal fluctuations.
Current weather and rainfall conditions are not entirely favorable for the sugarcane crop, and there is uncertainty regarding whether conditions will normalize during July and August.
This situation is likely to impact not only the average yield and total production of sugarcane but could also lead to a decline in the average sugar recovery rate. Consequently, sugar stocks may remain low.
