Production area of Kharif crops reached 933 lakh hectares

New Delhi. With the increase in the area of paddy, coarse grains and sugarcane, the area of Kharif crops has increased to 933 lakh hectares this time, which is 45 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 888 lakh hectares during the same period last year, but 163 lakh hectares behind the normal average area of 1096 lakh hectares.
Cultivation of Kharif crops continues throughout August as well as till the second-third week of September. There can be good improvement in the sowing area during this period of one and a half months.
Due to good rains of south-west monsoon, the production area of paddy at the national level has jumped from 274 lakh hectares last year to 319 lakh hectares this time.
Similarly, the sowing area of coarse cereals has increased from 165 lakh hectare to 319 lakh hectare and the area of sugarcane has improved from 55.70 lakh hectare to 57.30 lakh hectare.
On the other hand, during the period under review, the production area of pulses slipped from 101.50 lakh hectare to 101.20 lakh hectare, the sowing area of oilseeds has come down from 178.10 lakh hectare to 171 lakh hectare and the area of cotton has come down from 108.40 lakh hectare to 105.90 lakh hectare. There has also been a slight decline in the area of jute mesta.
Among pulses, moong and moth have been sown in a larger area than last year, but the area of tuvar and urad is lagging behind.
Among oilseeds, the sowing area of other crops except castor has decreased, which also includes soybean, groundnut, sesame and sunflower oil.
The area under peanut production was ahead of last year but now it has fallen behind. The area under soybean was already behind. Now the area under sesame has also decreased.
As far as coarse cereals are concerned, the area under production of jowar, bajra and ragi has decreased a bit compared to last year but as expected, there has been a tremendous increase of about 10 lakh hectares in the sowing area of maize and its area has jumped from 82 lakh hectares last year to 92 lakh hectares this time.
