Pea Harvest Begins in Canada with Promising Yields

Saskatoon. Harvesting of the new pea crop has started in some areas of Saskatchewan, Canada's most prominent agricultural producer state, and its yield rate is seen to be better in the initial phase.
The weather was largely favorable in the areas where harvesting has started. But as soon as the harvesting of the new crop begins, pressure on the market price has started increasing and buyers are asking producers to keep the price of peas low. Usually this happens at the beginning of the season.
At present, the price of yellow peas in the markets of Western Canada is being reported to be $ 9.00-9.50 per bushel, while there is a lack of buyers for Maple peas, but trading in yellow peas has started.
Although Canadian producers and exporters are worried and upset with China's policy because China has imposed a hefty import duty of 100 percent on Canadian peas, Canada has high hopes from India. Import of yellow peas in India has been made duty free till March 31, 2026.
In the coming weeks, the new crop of peas will be ready for harvesting in full swing in all the producing states of Canada, especially in the top producing provinces like Saskatchewan and Alberta, which will increase the supply and availability.
The price of old stock peas is expected to gradually soften and come closer to the price of new peas. Since there are signs of increase in average yield rate, huge stocks of peas of all categories and varieties are likely to be available there during the current marketing season.
There are reports of small export shipments of peas from Canada to China, which suggests that some talks have taken place regarding reduction of 100 percent import duty.
Demand from India is currently sluggish and unless there is strong demand there, additional export markets will have to be explored in Canada, otherwise huge stocks of peas will continue to put pressure on its prices.
