But not too slow

New Delhi. Prices of Magaj-Talbooj have been falling for some time now. But sources say that the falling prices should stop after 15th August and the prices should increase by 40/50 rupees in the months of September-October. Because there is no possibility of import this year. Also, the arrival of Desi goods will start around Diwali. Sources believe that business has been declining for the past one month. Due to which the prices are continuously falling.

It is worth mentioning that in the beginning of July, the price of Sudan Magaj-Talbooj in Jodhpur Mandi was quoted at Rs. 640/650 and the price of Desi goods was Rs. 630. At present, the price of Sudan is quoted at Rs. 575 and the price of Desi is quoted at Rs. 565, but even at the current prices, the business is low. Traders say that after Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami festival, the business will run smoothly and the prices will also increase gradually. According to an estimate, in the year 2023, due to low production in the country and civil war in Sudan, the import of Magaj-watermelon was affected, due to which the prices of Magaj-watermelon reached a record level of Rs 820/830 in November-December-2023.

Sowing

Due to sufficient monsoon rains in the major producing state Rajasthan, there is a possibility but the sowing of watermelon will be satisfactory. While the new crop will start around Diwali. After the record rise in the year 2023, the inclination of farmers has increased towards the cultivation of Magaj watermelon. Due to which the production of Magaj watermelon in the country has started increasing to 45/50 thousand tonnes. Before the year 2023, the production of Magaj watermelon was 30/32 thousand tonnes and the prices were also between 125/150.

Slow-fast

Sources believe that there is no possibility of slowdown in the current prices of Magaj watermelon. Because the prices have come down considerably. Currently, the price in Delhi market is being quoted at Rs 600/605, which was being quoted at Rs 660/665 in the beginning of July.

Import compulsion

Due to low production of Magaj-watermelon in the country as compared to consumption, import has become our compulsion. Sources say that our annual consumption of Magaj-watermelon is about 85/90 thousand tonnes, while domestic production is 45/50 thousand tonnes, hence import is necessary to meet the consumption.

Stock

Traders say that due to high imports during the year 2024-25, the stock is sufficient till the new crop arrives. According to an estimate, the stock of indigenous goods at the producing centers is currently believed to be 4/5 thousand tonnes, while the stock of foreign goods is believed to be 15/17 thousand tonnes.
