Panel recommends 100% MSP procurement for pulses & oilseeds; suggests duty on palm oil
★ The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture has recommended major reforms in the pulses and oilseeds sector, including ensuring 100% procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP), compared to the current coverage of around 25%.
★ The panel has also proposed a 20% safeguard duty on palm oil when global prices fall below $800 per tonne, aimed at protecting domestic farmers from cheaper imports.
★ In addition, the committee suggested creating a “National Seed Grid”, expanding procurement centres, and launching digital portals and helplines to improve access for farmers. It also called for stricter laws to curb the sale of spurious seeds.
★ To boost farmer incomes, the report recommended strengthening Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), setting up processing units, and launching a ‘Bharat Oil’ brand on the lines of ‘Bharat Dal’.
