Melbourne. A slight decline was recorded in Australia’s exports of *desi* (indigenous variety) chickpeas during September compared to August. Annual export performance also appeared somewhat weaker.
A report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)—a government agency—indicates that total chickpea exports from Australia for the entire 2024–25 marketing season (October–September) stood at 1.961 million tonnes; this figure fell by 82,000 tonnes to 1.879 million tonnes for the 2025–26 marketing season.
According to the ABS report, chickpea exports from the country in September 2026 reached 166,230 tonnes, slightly lower than the 171,929 tonnes shipped in August. In September, the largest volume of chickpeas—55,512 tonnes—was exported from Australia to India, while 53,036 tonnes were shipped to Bangladesh and 31,766 tonnes to Pakistan.
Following two years of robust production, chickpea yields in Australia are expected to decline during the 2026–27 season, and crop quality may also be affected by unseasonal rainfall in key producing regions.
