Order Fixing Ex-Factory Sugar Prices in Uttar Pradesh Withdrawn

Lucknow: Although the Uttar Pradesh government had issued an order fixing the ex-factory price of sugar in the state at ₹5,000 per quintal, it subsequently withdrew the order. The state administration revoked the directive in light of the Central Government's vigorous efforts to curb the surge in sugar prices.

Notably, the ex-factory price of sugar in Maharashtra has dropped to around ₹4,200 per quintal. Wholesale prices have declined in certain cities, and retail prices have also begun to fall. Under these circumstances, fixing the ex-factory price at ₹5,000 per quintal in Uttar Pradesh appeared unjustified. Sugar mills had also contended that the order was not in accordance with legal provisions. With the withdrawal of the order, sugar mills have regained the freedom to determine prices independently.

The order fixing the ex-factory sugar price in Uttar Pradesh had been issued by the District Magistrate of Bijnor and was applicable to units across the entire state. The District Magistrate stated that the decision was taken to control the price surge following a virtual meeting with the state's Chief Secretary. It is worth noting that Uttar Pradesh is the second-largest sugar-producing state in the country, after Maharashtra.
