News Capsule: India Pulse Market: Black Sea Disruptions Lift Yellow Pea Offers, African Pigeon Peas Turn Firmer
★ India-bound yellow pea prices have strengthened as the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to disrupt normal Black Sea trade and create uncertainty over export availability. Russia/Ukraine-origin yellow peas for India rose to $380/tonne for September-October shipment, up $20 on the week and 12% above the four-week average.
★ Canadian yellow peas for India also increased to $415/tonne, up $10 from the previous week. The firming of offers indicates that buyers are facing higher replacement costs as Black Sea supply and shipping remain uncertain. Recent attacks on Black Sea ports and vessels have already disrupted regional grain exports and forced Asian buyers to look for alternative supplies.
★ African pigeon pea prices are also moving higher, particularly for India. Mozambique-origin pigeon peas (Gajri) climbed to $710/tonne, up $55 on the week and 12% above the four-week average. Malawi red pigeon peas rose to $620/tonne, up $30.
★ African suppliers appear to be taking a firmer stance as they anticipate stronger Indian buying interest. The developing El Niño and below-normal rainfall are raising concerns over India's pulse production and could increase the country's dependence on imports. India recorded a significant rainfall deficit in August, while September rainfall is also forecast to remain below normal.
★ Market outlook: With Black Sea export disruptions affecting yellow pea availability and El Niño adding uncertainty to India's pulse crop, importers may face firmer offers in the coming weeks. African suppliers are likely to remain aggressive on pigeon pea prices if expectations of stronger Indian import demand continue.
