News Capsule: SOPA Urges Govt to Restore Standard Edible Oil Pack Sizes
★ The Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) has urged the government to reinstate standard packaging sizes for edible oils, stating that the current system is causing consumer confusion.
★ According to SOPA, after the rules were removed in January 2023, a wide range of non-standard pack sizes such as 350g, 440g, 810g, and 910ml have entered the market, making price comparison difficult. Similar-looking packs with different quantities often mislead consumers.
★ The association also noted that the unit price (per gram/ml) labeling rule is ineffective in practice and does not ensure transparency.
★ SOPA has called for the immediate reintroduction of standard pack sizes, along with a transition period for the industry to adjust.
