News Capsule: Monsoon Weakens Across Most Parts of India; IMD Issues Red Alert for Uttarakhand
★ The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that southwest monsoon activity has weakened across most parts of the country. However, heavy rainfall continues over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and the northeastern states. The IMD has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
★ According to the IMD, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Northeast India, West Bengal and Bihar during the next 2-3 days. East Uttar Pradesh is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall over the next 4-5 days. In contrast, rainfall activity is likely to remain subdued over northwest, west-central and south peninsular India during the next 6-7 days.
★ In Uttarakhand, continuous rainfall triggered landslides, blocking 126 roads, including two national highways. Restoration work is underway on the Yamunotri Highway, which has remained closed due to a landslide. Himachal Pradesh also witnessed light to moderate rainfall, while several districts of West Bengal received heavy showers, with the active monsoon expected to continue there until July 14.
★ Uttar Pradesh remained largely rain-free on Sunday, though the IMD has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall at a few places in eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next 24 hours, with isolated heavy rain expected in the northeastern region of the state. From June 1 to July 12, the state received 158.8 mm of rainfall against the normal 190.9 mm, leaving it with a 17% rainfall deficit.
★ Rajasthan continued to experience dry weather. However, light rainfall is expected in parts of Jaipur, Bharatpur and the Shekhawati region between July 13 and 15. The IMD has also warned of dust-laden winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph over parts of western Rajasthan, particularly Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions, during the next two to three days.
