News Capsule: Mills Question Retail Sugar Prices
★ Sugar mills have questioned why retail sugar prices have not fallen as expected despite a sharp decline of nearly 30% in ex-mill prices. Average ex-mill prices have fallen from around ₹50 to ₹45 per kg, while retail prices remain at ₹61–63 per kg.
★ According to ISMA and NFCSF, there is no shortage of sugar in the market, and the gap between ex-mill and retail prices ideally should not exceed ₹6–7 per kg.
★ The government has approved a duty-free import quota of 1 million tonnes, which is expected to further improve availability. Mills are also preparing to begin the 2026–27 crushing season 10–15 days earlier than usual.
