Focus on Soybean and Groundnut Crops

Mumbai: The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), a leading organization in the oilseed and edible oil industry and trade, states that the picture emerging after the near-completion of Kharif oilseed sowing is largely satisfactory. By September 18, the total area under oilseed cultivation reached 194.76 lakh hectares, virtually matching the 194.75 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.

The total oilseed acreage for the entire 2025 Kharif season was recorded at 196.38 lakh hectares. Maintaining an oilseed acreage comparable to last year is certainly positive news, especially considering the delays caused by a weak monsoon—linked to the El Niño weather cycle—and a significant rainfall deficit in June. The oil industry is satisfied with these sowing figures.

Although the area sown for the two major Kharif oilseed crops—soybean and groundnut—is lower than last year, the decline is not substantial. The primary concern for farmers remains the weather and monsoon conditions.

When assessing the future supply and availability of oilseeds and edible oils, factors such as crop progress and potential total yield will be considered alongside sowing data, as unfavorable weather could lead to a reduction in yield rates.
