News Capsule: Govt Considering Duty Relief on Cotton Imports
★ The government is evaluating a cut or removal of the 5% customs duty on raw cotton imports to support the textile industry amid rising input costs and supply disruptions due to the West Asia conflict.
★ India mainly uses domestic cotton but imports long-staple varieties from countries like the US, Egypt, and Australia. A temporary duty relief is being discussed to ease cost pressures, improve margins, and boost export competitiveness.
★ The move comes as India’s garment exports slipped to $15.77 billion in FY26, reflecting weak global demand.
