News Capsule: Global Pulse Prices Under Pressure
★ Indian buyers have resumed purchases of US green lentils, but they are now demanding sharp price revisions from exporters as international prices have declined significantly.
★ With large and strong harvests of lentils, peas, and chickpeas reported in Canada, the US, Australia, and Russia this year, global pulse prices remain under heavy pressure.
★ Last year, forward contracts for US green lentils destined for India were concluded at $850–1,250 per tonne. This year, prices have dropped sharply to around $560 per tonne.
Current export offers:
• Canada: $640 per tonne (compared with $765 in August)
• Russia: around $610 per tonne (compared with $785 in August)
Other pulses have also witnessed sharp declines:
• African-origin pigeon peas: from $600 to $550 per tonne
• Chickpeas: below $500 per tonne from about $700
• Yellow peas: from $415 to $300–320 per tonne
★ US green lentils are largely consumed in Tamil Nadu, where they are distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) and also used in the domestic market as a substitute for pigeon peas.
★ Despite increasing global supplies and a gradual return of Indian buying activity, the overall sentiment in the international pulses market remains bearish.
