Kharif crop acreage in Gujarat slightly higher than last year

Ahmedabad. Kharif crop sowing in Gujarat, the western state of India, lagged behind last year's planting in the initial phase. The erratic monsoon season from mid-July to August 20th resulted in fluctuations in weekly data on kharif crop acreage. Farmers also faced a dilemma in choosing kharif crops.

However, the situation began to normalize, and ultimately, the kharif crop acreage improved by 5606 hectares from last year's 84,88,784 hectares to 84,94,390 hectares in 2025. The sowing process has already ended.

According to the report of the State Agriculture Department, during the Kharif season this year, compared to last year, the combined production area of ​​paddy and coarse grains in Gujarat improved from 13.74 lakh hectares to 13.82 lakh hectares, the sowing area of ​​pulses increased from 4.07 lakh hectares to 4.65 lakh hectares and the area of ​​oilseeds jumped from 29.06 lakh hectares to 32.04 lakh hectares.

However, on the other hand, the area under cotton declined from 23.72 lakh hectares to 20.96 lakh hectares and the sowing area of ​​guar seed fell from 85 thousand hectares to 75 thousand hectares.

During the period under review, the area under paddy production in Gujarat increased from 8.87 lakh hectares to 9.05 lakh hectares and the area under millet improved from 1.68 lakh hectares to 1.73 lakh hectares but the area under maize fell from 2.86 lakh hectares to 2.81 lakh hectares. The sowing of sorghum also decreased slightly.

Similarly, among pulses crops, the area under pigeon pea (tuvar) increased from 2.44 lakh hectares to 3.10 lakh hectares but the area under green gram slipped from 55 thousand hectares to 49 hectares.

On the other hand, the area under black gram remained at the previous level of 84 thousand hectares. Among oilseed crops, the area under groundnut production jumped from 19.08 lakh hectares last year to 22.02 lakh hectares this time and the area under castor also increased from 6.46 lakh hectares to 6.85 lakh hectares, but the area under soybean fell from 3.01 lakh hectares to 2.77 lakh hectares this time.
