Moong Prices in Rajasthan Below MSP Due to Lack of Government Procurement

Jaipur: Although the arrival of the new Kharif crop of *moong* (green gram) has commenced in Rajasthan—the country's leading producer—the government has not yet taken a decision regarding procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Consequently, farmers are being forced to sell their produce at prices below the MSP. The crop condition in the state is good this season.

According to trade analysts, Rajasthan witnessed a massive influx of approximately 63,000 tonnes of new *moong* between September 1 and September 20 this year—nearly ten times the supply recorded during the same period last year. However, the average wholesale market price was recorded at ₹7,452 per quintal, which is 15 percent lower than the Centre-announced MSP of ₹8,780 per quintal.

It is noteworthy that the MSP for *moong* saw a negligible increase this time, and market prices remain quite low, preventing farmers from realizing profitable returns on their produce. There may be a greater emphasis on mustard cultivation during the upcoming Rabi season in Rajasthan, and some farmers might consider reducing the area under *moong* cultivation for the next Kharif season.

Data from the Agmarknet portal indicates that the average wholesale market price of *moong* in Rajasthan stood at ₹7,000 per quintal at the beginning of the current month, rising to ₹7,960 per quintal by September 17. Analysts observe that, given the heavy market arrivals, the current price of *moong* appears normal. Supply figures in Rajasthan's markets for the September 1–18 period show that *moong* arrivals stood at 6,451 tonnes in 2025 and 7,574 tonnes in 2024, before surging to 63,000 tonnes in 2026.
