Kharif Crop Acreage Surpasses Last Year's Levels in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh and Telangana—two key agricultural states in South India—are witnessing a significant increase in the area under Kharif crops compared to last year. In Andhra Pradesh, the acreage has risen by 39% (or 1.88 lakh hectares) from 4.81 lakh hectares to 6.69 lakh hectares, while in Telangana, it has increased by 3.28 lakh acres, moving from 52.04 lakh acres to 55.32 lakh acres. Sowing operations are currently underway in both states.
In Andhra Pradesh, compared to the previous year, the area under paddy cultivation for the current Kharif season has surged from 1.78 lakh hectares to 2.20 lakh hectares; the acreage for coarse cereals has improved from 44,000 hectares to 52,000 hectares; and the area for oilseeds has risen from 55,000 hectares to 65,000 hectares. Similarly, cotton sowing has increased by 1.63 lakh hectares, reaching 2.40 lakh hectares.
In the neighboring state of Telangana, while the area under paddy increased from 3.64 lakh acres to 4.22 lakh acres, pulses from 3.52 lakh acres to 3.67 lakh acres, oilseeds from 2.76 lakh acres to 3.38 lakh acres, and cotton from 34.59 lakh acres to 39.44 lakh acres, the area under coarse cereals dropped significantly from 5.24 lakh acres last year to 2.99 lakh acres this season. Within the coarse cereals category, the acreage for maize, in particular, declined from 4.97 lakh acres to 2.84 lakh acres.
Telangana has seen good soybean sowing, with the cultivation area increasing from 2.75 lakh acres last year to 3.35 lakh acres this season. Similarly, among pulse crops, the sowing area for arhar (tur) rose from 3.11 lakh acres to 3.19 lakh acres. In Andhra Pradesh too, the sowing area for tur increased from 26,000 hectares to 70,000 hectares, while the groundnut acreage rose from 43,000 hectares to 47,000 hectares.
