Kharif Crop Acreage in Telangana Trails Last Year's Figures

Hyderabad: Although the current year has seen a significant increase in the sowing area for crops such as arhar (tur/pigeon pea), moong (green gram), urad (black gram), soybean, cotton, and sugarcane in the South Indian state of Telangana compared to last year, a decline in the acreage of paddy and maize has limited the total Kharif crop area to 107.17 lakh acres as of August 12, 2026. This is 1.32 lakh acres less than the 108.49 lakh acres sown during the same period last year.

According to official data, the total area under cereal crops shrank from 51.52 lakh acres to 47.11 lakh acres during the current Kharif season, driven by a drop in paddy acreage from 45.21 lakh acres to 41.54 lakh acres and a decline in maize sowing area from 5.97 lakh acres to 5.31 lakh acres.

However, the area under pulse crops rose from 5.52 lakh acres to 6.38 lakh acres. Specifically, the sowing area for tur increased from 4.70 lakh acres to 5.04 lakh acres, moong acreage jumped from 59,000 acres to 96,000 acres, and urad acreage improved from 22,000 acres to 35,000 acres. Sowing of other pulses also increased.

The sowing area for oilseed crops also rose from 3.65 lakh acres to 3.79 lakh acres. Within this category, soybean acreage increased from 3.59 lakh acres to 3.79 lakh acres, while groundnut acreage saw a slight decline. In the category of cash or industrial crops in Telangana, the area under sugarcane cultivation increased from 29,000 acres to 38,000 acres, while the area sown with cotton rose from 44.64 lakh acres to 47.72 lakh acres. Telangana ranks among the leading producers of paddy and cotton.
