Heavy Rainfall Brings Relief to Kharif Crops in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh

New Delhi. Good monsoon rainfall in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh—two of the country's leading agricultural states—is expected to provide significant relief to Kharif crops and accelerate their growth. According to the Meteorological Department, the formation of a low-pressure area is expected to trigger extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of Uttar Pradesh and western Madhya Pradesh. Intense downpours are likely in the southwestern districts of Uttar Pradesh—particularly Etawah, Jhansi, and Lalitpur—as well as in the Datia district of Madhya Pradesh. A flood threat persists in some districts of Uttar Pradesh, with river water levels rising rapidly. The Meteorological Department has issued a 'Red Alert' for extremely heavy rainfall in the districts within these regions.

The monsoon performance in Madhya Pradesh has been relatively better this season. According to the Meteorological Department, a trough line extending towards the Bay of Bengal is passing through the low-pressure area formed over southern Uttar Pradesh and northeastern Madhya Pradesh. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is also likely in isolated areas of the northwestern states. Rainy spells continue in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Rainfall is also forecast for the remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh on September 3.

During the Kharif season, paddy, sugarcane, and various other crops are cultivated on a large scale in Uttar Pradesh, while Madhya Pradesh sees significant acreage dedicated to soybean, urad (black gram), and cotton. Madhya Pradesh is notably renowned for the production of pulses and oilseeds. Although rainfall was initially somewhat deficient in Uttar Pradesh, the recent good rains are expected to improve crop conditions.
