Harvesting Completed on Only 27% of Crop Area in Saskatchewan by September 7

Saskatoon. Frequent rainfall is significantly hindering crop harvesting operations in Saskatchewan, Canada's leading agricultural province. According to the Department of Agriculture, harvesting was completed on only 27% of the provincial crop area between August 1 and September 7; this figure is well below the five-year average of 58% and the ten-year average of 50%.

The department's report indicates that during the current marketing season, as of September 7, harvesting was completed for 87% of winter wheat, 94% of fall rye, 41% of barley, 38% of durum wheat, 13% of spring wheat, 14% of oats, and 11% of canary seed.

Among oilseeds, harvesting was completed for 50% of mustard, 3% of flaxseed, 7% of soybeans, and 9% of canola. Regarding pulse crops, harvesting had been completed on 84% of the lentil area and 79% of the field pea area, whereas only 24% of the chickpea (kabuli) crop had been harvested. Rainfall occurred while harvesting operations were underway.
