Government Procurement of Tur to Continue in May Across Major Producing States

New Delhi. The Central Government has extended the procurement schedule of Arhar (Tur), a key Kharif pulse crop, across multiple producing states to ensure better price support for farmers and bolster its buffer stock. In Andhra Pradesh, where tur arrivals are still ongoing, the procurement deadline has been extended from 22 April to 22 May, offering much-needed relief to growers.

In other states, the procurement timelines are as follows:

  • Telangana: 8 January to 30 April

  • Karnataka: 2 January to 2 May

  • Maharashtra: 13 February to 13 May

  • Gujarat: 25 February to 25 May

  • Uttar Pradesh: 2 April to 30 June

  • Madhya Pradesh: 25 February to 29 April

  • Chhattisgarh: 15 February to 15 May

For Madhya Pradesh, where the procurement deadline is nearing, the Union Agriculture Ministry has indicated it may consider an extension if the state government makes a formal request.

In Haryana, tur has limited production and an early harvest. The procurement window was set from 1 to 31 December 2024, but due to high market prices at that time, the government agencies were unable to make significant purchases.

According to official data, 3.92 lakh tonnes of tur have been procured so far from more than 2.56 lakh farmers across major states. This year, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for tur has been fixed at Rs 7,550 per quintal, and purchases are being made at this rate.

The Agriculture Ministry has approved the procurement of up to 13.22 lakh tonnes of tur this season. With only about 30 percent of the target achieved, the government is working to increase purchases amid lower market prices. In contrast to the past two years—when prices were higher than MSP and procurement remained weak—this season has seen better participation, helping the government rebuild its buffer stock and prepare for market interventions during the off-season.
