Hyderabad. After a gap of nearly five years, Telangana is set to reintroduce a crop insurance scheme for its farmers. The state government has announced the implementation of the Integrated Crop Insurance Scheme starting from the upcoming Kharif season.
Telangana had opted out of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in 2020, but has now decided to rejoin the central government’s scheme.
Under this scheme, farmers will pay just 2% premium for Kharif crops and 1.5% for Rabi crops. The remaining premium will be shared between the state and central governments. For commercial crops, the farmers' premium contribution will be around 5%.
To improve the assessment of crop losses, the state has been divided into 11 clusters. According to the Telangana Agriculture Minister, this scheme will provide much-needed relief to farmers facing frequent losses due to adverse weather conditions such as unseasonal rain, storms, hail, droughts, and floods.
In Telangana, during the Kharif season, around 1.28 crore acres are cultivated, including 67 lakh acres of paddy, 45 lakh acres of cotton, and 5 lakh acres of maize.
During the Rabi season, the total cropped area is around 78 lakh acres, with 59 lakh acres under paddy and 9 lakh acres under maize. The scheme is expected to cover approximately 98% of the total cultivated area in the state.
The revival of the crop insurance scheme aims to safeguard farmers' livelihoods and boost their confidence in agricultural investments amid increasing climate uncertainties.
