Rome. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)—a specialized agency of the United Nations—reported that its global rice price index rose by 0.05 percent in August to reach 109 points, marking a 7.4 percent increase compared to the base period. Prices for Indica rice, in particular, saw a significant rise.
While the index for Indica rice increased by 1.2 percent in August compared to July, the price indices for Japonica and aromatic rice fell by 2.7 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively. The index for glutinous rice remained virtually unchanged.
The Asian Indica rice market—particularly in Vietnam—saw a surge in prices due to delays in the harvesting of the new summer-autumn paddy crop. The price of Vietnamese 25 percent broken rice rose from $389.10 per tonne in July to $418.40 per tonne in August. Similarly, the price of 5 percent broken rice jumped from $425.30 to $441.40 per tonne. Prices for Indian and Thai rice also remained firm.
