New Delhi. A total of 722.74 crore liters of ethanol was supplied to the oil marketing companies (OMCs) during the first nine months of the current marketing year 2024-25 (November-October) i.e.

from November-2024 to July 2025. In this, the share of ethanol produced from grains was 448.93 crore liters and the share of ethanol produced from sugarcane was 273.81 crore liters.

In grain-based ethanol, the contribution of maize was 309.68 crore liters, the contribution of damaged grains was 55.51 crore liters and the contribution of ethanol produced from surplus grains was 83.74 crore liters.

Similarly, in the supply of sugarcane based ethanol, the share of goods manufactured from sugarcane juice was recorded at 157.92 crore liters, the share of B-heavy molasses was 103.43 crore liters and the share of ethanol manufactured from C-heavy molasses was 12.46 crore liters.

The above data clearly shows that the share of products manufactured from grains in the total supply of ethanol was much higher than that manufactured from sugarcane.

During the period under review, the share of products manufactured from grains in the total supply of ethanol to OMCs increased to around 62 percent while the share of ethanol manufactured from sugarcane decreased to around 38 percent. The contribution of ethanol manufactured from maize, a category of grains, increased rapidly. Its share reached 309.68 crore liters, which was much higher than all other categories.

In the marketing season of 2024-25, the production of sugarcane was low, so its limited quantity could be used in ethanol production.

On the other hand, due to the excellent production of maize, the distilleries of the country got a good opportunity to increase its use in ethanol production.

Maize was also imported from abroad. Apart from this, a huge stock of rice is being made available to the distilleries from the warehouses of Food Corporation of India (FCI) at a subsidized price of Rs 2250 per quintal.
