Hyderabad: In view of the financial losses being incurred by farmers—as wholesale market prices have dropped below the Minimum Support Price (MSP)—the Telangana government has decided to procure at least one-third of the total estimated maize production of 4.32 million tonnes.

This year, the Central Government has fixed the MSP for maize at ₹2,400 per quintal. The State Government has decided to procure 1.489 million tonnes of maize at this MSP, an initiative estimated to cost ₹4,173 crore. The State Cabinet has approved the proposal for maize procurement.

Furthermore, the State Government has agreed to provide a guarantee to assist the Telangana State Cooperative Marketing Federation (TS MARKFED) in raising the necessary funds for the procurement of maize.

Maize was cultivated across approximately 700,000 hectares in Telangana, and an average yield rate of 65.66 quintals per hectare was recorded.

The state is striving to secure a place among the country's top maize-producing states. Currently, the average market price for maize in Telangana's mandis stands at ₹1,600 per quintal.
