Kochi. After reaching a new record level in July, the price of copra and coconut oil has started to soften. Under this, the price of coconut oil fell by Rs 6 per kg and the price of copra by Rs 10 per kg was recorded yesterday.
According to Cochin Oil Merchants Association (COMA), the wholesale market price of coconut oil in Kochi has fallen to Rs 379 and the price of copra has come down to Rs 240 per kg. At one time in July, this price had jumped to the top level of Rs 393 and Rs 261 per kg respectively.
According to industry analysts, the arrival of new copra has increased in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The coconut plucking season has started there with some delay.
Producers are preparing copra from their coconuts as quickly as possible so that maximum benefit can be taken from the high market price.
New copra has started reaching the market. However, the price of coconut oil in the retail market is still running between Rs 450-500 per kg and it is likely to take some time for it to fall. But in view of the slowdown in the market and the increasing arrival of new goods,
traders-stockists have started to quickly offload their stock in the market, which is expected to increase its supply and availability. However, the demand for coconut oil is also seen to be somewhat weak at high prices.
Although the government has cut the import duty on crude edible oil, which has affected the prices of palm oil, soybean and sunflower oil to some extent, the coconut oil market was not affected by this at all, rather the atmosphere of boom and strength remained intact in it.
Due to the record high price, coconut oil became out of the reach of the common man and Kerala consumers started adopting other cheap edible oils which include palmolein, sunflower oil and blended oil etc. These edible oils are available at less than half the price of coconut oil.
The business of adulterating coconut oil has also started to grow and this adulterated but deadly coconut oil is being sold at a cheaper price. The price of coconut oil is likely to fall further in the coming weeks when the supply and availability of coconut and copra increases.
