Rome. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)—a specialized agency of the United Nations—recorded a 2.7 percent increase in its global rice price index in May compared to April.
The average price index for rice across all categories and price points rose during this period, clearly indicating a strengthening of rice prices in major supplying nations such as India, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, the USA, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
However, the average rice price index in May 2026 remained 1.4 percent lower than in May 2025; global market prices for various rice varieties had reached significantly high levels the previous year.
According to the FAO report, the most notable price increases in May 2026 were observed in Indica and glutinous rice varieties.
Compared to April, prices for these varieties rose by 3 percent and 3.10 percent, respectively. Prices for aromatic rice also increased by 2.2 percent, while Japonica rice prices rose by 0.5 percent. The average export offer price for Indica rice from Asian countries saw an uptick in May.
