New Delhi: The Central Government has revised the wheat procurement target for the current Rabi marketing season, increasing it by 100,000 tonnes—from 34.5 million tonnes to 34.6 million tonnes—with the possibility of this target being raised even further in the future. Procurement for the Central Pool has already reached very close to the set target, while the procurement process remains ongoing in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. In Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, wheat procurement has already exceeded the respective targets, whereas in Punjab, the quantity procured is approximately equal to the target. Procurement operations have now concluded in Punjab and Haryana.
Currently, the procurement target for Gujarat has been raised from 4,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes, while an announcement regarding an increase in the target for Madhya Pradesh is expected shortly. In Madhya Pradesh, over 10 million tonnes of wheat have already been procured.
At the national level, total procurement has surpassed 34.54 million tonnes, exceeding the original target of 34.5 million tonnes. The Madhya Pradesh government has requested that the wheat procurement target for the state be raised from 10 million tonnes to 13.1 million tonnes.
According to senior official sources, wheat procurement operations are continuing in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, procurement has exceeded the target, while in Rajasthan, it is nearing the set target. To date, government procurement stands at 12.163 million tonnes in Punjab,
10.314 million tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 2.223 million tonnes in Rajasthan, and 1.622 million tonnes in Uttar Pradesh. At the national level, total procurement has reached 34.54 million tonnes, representing a 16.15 percent increase compared to the 29.737 million tonnes procured during the corresponding period last year.
Of the total 34.54 million tonnes procured so far during the current Rabi marketing season, the quantity of wheat falling under the URS (Under Relaxed Specifications) category is estimated at 3.34 million tonnes.
In Haryana, 100 percent of the wheat falls into this category, while in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh as well, the majority of the wheat belongs to the URS category—characterized by a lack of luster, discoloration, or broken and shriveled grains.
