Urad Prices Recover; Demand Remains Limited Amid Rising Arrivals

Chennai: Urad prices witnessed a modest recovery during the current week, driven by an improvement in demand. However, the market rally remained limited, as domestic supplies and the availability of imported stock continued to be substantial. Sowing of Urad during the ongoing summer season has exceeded that of the previous year. Arrivals of the summer crop have also commenced in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, leading to a gradual increase in Urad availability within the producing *mandis* (markets). Offtake of Urad dal remains limited at present, prompting dal mills to restrict their purchases strictly to immediate requirements. Furthermore, the continued arrival of regular shipments of imported Urad ensures that market supply remains adequate. According to market experts, despite it being a peak consumption season, demand for Urad dal remains weaker than anticipated. Consequently, the likelihood of any significant upward surge in the domestic market appears low for the time being. Driven by limited selling pressure from importers and an improvement in demand, Urad prices in Chennai recorded a recovery of ₹50 per quintal this week; following this correction, prices settled at ₹7,925 per quintal for FAQ (Fair Average Quality) grade and ₹8,550 per quintal for SQ (Superior Quality) grade. Similarly, Urad prices in Mumbai witnessed an increase of ₹50 per quintal this week, closing the week at ₹7,950 per quintal.
