Limited Price Fluctuations in Mustard, Driven by Supply and Demand Dynamics
New Delhi: With the peak season for arrivals currently underway, major markets (mandis) are witnessing a heavy influx of mustard. Consequently, selling pressure is mounting as traders and stockists engage in profit-booking. Meanwhile, crushing and processing units are procuring the crop in substantial quantities. As a result, during the week of May 2–8, mustard prices recorded limited fluctuations—ranging between a rise or fall of ₹100–150 per quintal—in line with prevailing supply and demand conditions. An exception was observed in Haryana's Sirsa market, where mustard prices surged by a significant ₹400, reaching ₹6,600 per quintal.
Mustard (42% Condition)
The price of mustard with a 42% oil content condition remained stable at ₹7,000 per quintal in Delhi; however, in Jaipur, it declined by ₹75 to settle at ₹7,300 per quintal. Prices for mustard of average, standard quality softened slightly in Gujarat, while they firmed up in the markets of Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh
In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, prices improved by ₹50, reaching a range of ₹7,550–₹8,100 per quintal. In Rajasthan—the country's leading mustard-producing state—prices generally witnessed moderate fluctuations, rising or falling within a range of ₹50–₹100. In Bharatpur, prices rose by ₹50 to reach ₹7,000 per quintal, whereas in Bundi, they dropped by ₹100 to settle at ₹7,200 per quintal.
Mustard Oil
Mustard Oil: Prices for both 'Expeller' and 'Kacchi Ghani' (cold-pressed) mustard oil varieties continued to demonstrate strength. Consumers are increasingly shifting their focus toward using indigenous edible oils—particularly mustard oil—rather than expensive imported alternatives, as the current pricing of domestic oils remains highly competitive.
Expeller / Kacchi Ghani
During the period under review, the price of Expeller oil in Delhi firmed up by ₹15 to reach ₹1,445 per 10 kg, while the rate for Kacchi Ghani oil in Bharatpur rose by ₹20 to touch ₹1,460 per 10 kg. In Bikaner, the price of Expeller oil increased by ₹80 to stand at ₹1,480 per 10 kg.
Arrivals
During the week under review, the average daily arrival of mustard across markets nationwide stood at 9.50–10.00 lakh bags (50 kg each), and nearly the entire quantity was successfully traded.
Mustard Cake (DOC)
Trading in Mustard Cake and DOC remained steady, with both domestic and export demand showing some signs of strengthening.
