But crop needs rain
New Delhi. In Maharashtra, which accounts for around 50% of the country’s turmeric production, nearly 90% of the sowing has been completed due to favorable rainfall in May. However, the lack of rain during the current month has raised concerns about potential damage to the sown crop.
Sources indicate that if rainfall does not resume by the end of June, turmeric crops in regions like Sangli and Marathwada could be at risk. Adequate moisture is crucial for the germination of turmeric.
This year, turmeric sowing in the Sangli region has increased by 20–25%, while in Marathwada—including Hingoli, Nanded, and Basmat—sowing has expanded by 30–35%.
On the Nizamabad line, there are also reports of a 20–25% rise in the sowing area. Around 75–80% of the sowing work has been completed in this belt, and weather conditions are currently favorable there.
Meanwhile, on the Erode and Duggirala lines, sowing has begun in a scattered manner. Sowing activity in these regions is expected to continue until around 15–20 July. Based on available information, there is a likelihood of an overall increase in turmeric sowing across these areas as well.
