Jodhpur. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a compact, hand-operated system that can convert saline seawater into pure and safe drinking water without electricity.
Designed and developed for soldiers deployed in extremely remote and isolated areas, this system can also prove effective in alleviating the drinking water crisis for army personnel working on islands, coastal areas, and disaster-stricken regions.
The new system, named Seawater Desalination System (SWADES), was unveiled at the DRDO Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur (Rajasthan) at the beginning of this month (January 2026).
According to the organization, such a system was previously considered a dream, but it has now become a reality.
This process has now begun, and further research and development will continue. Efforts will be made to develop this small system into a larger system, while also focusing on keeping the cost under control. This is a portable and hand-operated water purifier.
This system will be very helpful for soldiers in areas where fresh water is scarce. Scientists are focusing on converting saline seawater into pure and safe drinking water in the future so that it can be used in other areas as well.
