Target of cultivating Kharif crops in 9.17 lakh hectares in Kalaburgi district

Kalaburgi (Gulbarga). This year, the Agriculture Department has set a target of cultivating Kharif crops in a total area of 9.17 lakh hectares in Kalaburgi district of Karnataka, a key agricultural state in South India.
This is about 51,000 hectares more than the total area sown in the last Kharif season. Karnataka is the leading producer of Tuvar (pigeon pea), with Kalaburgi district being the highest contributor to its cultivation.
According to data from the Joint Director of Agriculture’s office, the highest sowing target for Kharif crops has been set in Aland taluk at 1,57,459 hectares, while the lowest is in Shahabad taluk at 15,566 hectares.
Other taluk-wise targets include 1,09,590 hectares in Afzalpur, 98,308 hectares in Kalaburgi taluk, 96,905 hectares in Jewargi, 89,125 hectares in Chittapur, 84,876 hectares in Sedam, and 83,500 hectares in Chincholi.
Additionally, targets of about 67,000 hectares in Yadram, 61,000 hectares in Kulagi, and 54,000 hectares in Kamalapur have also been set.
The sowing target for food grain crops in the district has once again been reduced—from 12,620 hectares last year to 11,753 hectares this year. In at least five previous Kharif seasons, food grain crops were cultivated in around 30,000 hectares.
For pulses, the target has been increased from 6,69,207 hectares last year to 7.10 lakh hectares this year. However, the target for oilseed crops has been reduced from 52,749 hectares to 39,796 hectares.
