Slight Improvement in Crop Seeding Pace in Saskatchewan

Regina. The seeding campaign for certain crops is currently underway in Saskatchewan, Canada's leading agricultural province. Heavy rainfall across several parts of the province last week led to excessive soil moisture levels. While this has benefited crops that were already sown, farmers are facing challenges in proceeding with further seeding. The rain has also increased the risk of pests and diseases affecting the crops.
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture, seeding operations have been completed on approximately 97 percent of the designated acreage in Saskatchewan. This figure is higher than the 93 percent recorded the previous week but slightly below the five-year and ten-year averages of 99 percent.
Saskatchewan cultivates a wide range of crops on a large scale, including wheat, canola, peas, and lentils. India imports significant quantities of yellow peas and lentils from Canada, with the majority originating from Saskatchewan.
Seeding is complete on 99 percent of the land in the province's west-central and south-western regions, and 98 percent in the northern and south-eastern regions; however, progress in the east-central region has reached only 90 percent. It is anticipated that, provided the weather remains clear and favorable, the seeding process will conclude by the end of June.
