New Delhi. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in some parts of the country over the next few days, alongside severe heat and heatwave conditions in other regions.

According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is likely in the country's sub-Himalayan regions and mountainous states, including West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya. Conversely, Maharashtra (particularly the Marathwada and Vidarbha divisions), Telangana, and Gujarat are expected to experience negligible or no rainfall and high temperatures until June 21.

Anticipating the impending crisis, the Maharashtra government has announced that priority will be given to using available water stocks in dams, reservoirs, and rivers for drinking purposes; water will be used for irrigation only if there is a surplus.

Severe heat conditions persist in many parts of Uttar Pradesh. Reports indicate a weak monsoon performance in Odisha, Goa, Konkan, and adjacent areas. The sowing area for Kharif crops is lagging behind last year's figures. While there is an urgent need for rain in areas where sowing has already taken place, the pace of further sowing is likely to slow down.
