No Major Decline Expected in Fennel Prices

New Delhi. Currently, fennel prices are being quoted on a soft note. This is because the arrival of new fennel crops has begun to increase in markets across major producing states—including Gujarat—as well as in Rajasthan. However, due to a reduction in the sown area, estimates suggest that the country's fennel production will decline during the current season. According to available information, fennel sowing for the current season in major producing states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other regions—covers an area of 86,000 hectares; in contrast, the sown area last year stood at 92,000 to 93,000 hectares. Owing to reduced sowing and adverse weather conditions following the planting phase, the country's fennel production for this year is estimated at 1.7 to 1.8 million bags (each bag weighing 55 kg). This compares to an estimated production of 1.8 to 1.9 million bags in the previous year (2025). In 2024, the country witnessed a record fennel production of 3.8 to 3.9 million bags.
Arrivals and Prices
In Unjha—a major market in Gujarat—the arrival of new fennel has risen to 20,000 to 22,000 bags, with average-quality produce being quoted at ₹80 to ₹110 per kilogram. Meanwhile, in Rajasthan's Nagaur market, the arrival of new fennel has commenced at a volume of 500 to 700 bags, with prices currently hovering between ₹100 and ₹110 per kilogram. The export price for Unjha-quality fennel is being quoted at ₹109 per kilogram, while Halvad-quality fennel is quoted at ₹108 per kilogram. These figures represent a decline from the prices recorded at the end of last week, which stood at ₹111 and ₹110 per kilogram, respectively. Market sources indicate that there are currently no immediate prospects for a price rally, as the pressure from incoming arrivals is expected to persist in the markets over the coming days. However, given that production has declined for the second consecutive year, a significant slump in prices is also considered unlikely. Current prices are expected to continue fluctuating within a narrow range of ₹4–5. However, prices are likely to recover once market arrivals decline.
Exports
During the first ten months of the current financial year (2025–26), fennel exports recorded a decline of 61% in terms of volume and 50% in terms of revenue. According to data released by the Spices Board, fennel exports between April 2025 and January 2026 amounted to 28,422 tonnes, generating revenue of ₹355 crore. In contrast, during the corresponding period of the previous year (April 2024 to January 2025), fennel exports stood at 72,089 tonnes, yielding revenue of ₹703.33 crore. For the full financial year 2024–25, total fennel exports reached a record high of 76,586 tonnes.
