News Capsule: Urea Supply Under Pressure Amid Israel–Iran War, Government on Alert
★ Domestic urea production in India has been impacted due to the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict, making the situation “highly sensitive.” However, the government has already arranged imports for April–May to manage supply.
★ Imports are being diversified from countries such as Russia, Morocco, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Jordan, Canada, Algeria, and Egypt.
★ States have been directed to prevent panic buying and curb hoarding and black marketing.
★ To ease pressure on urea, the use of alternative fertilizers like ammonium sulphate and triple super phosphate is being promoted.
★ Some instances of panic buying have been reported, but disruptions remain limited and localized.
★ While the situation is currently under control due to proactive government measures, close monitoring continues. If the conflict persists, urea shortages during the kharif season could impact crop productivity.
