News Capsule: Maharashtra – Soybean Prices, Government Procurement
★ Soybean prices in Maharashtra are rising ahead of procurement under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
★ Government procurement begins today in the State, and prices are expected to increase further.
★ Last month, due to heavy rains and weak demand, prices in some regions had fallen to around ₹4,500 per quintal. But now, in many mandis, prices have reached close to the MSP of ₹5,300 per quintal.
★ For this kharif season, the Central Government has approved PSS procurement of 1.85 million tonnes of soybean. The announcement of procurement has reduced arrivals in mandis as farmers are waiting to sell under the government scheme.
★ This year, soybean was sown on about 5 million acres in Maharashtra, which is 97% of last year’s acreage.
★ However, excessive rainfall in September–October caused damage during the flowering and pod-filling stages. According to SOPA, around 8% of the crop has been completely damaged.
